How to Pass an AI Interviewer: What It Scores in 2026

October 5, 2026 · Updated October 5, 2026

To pass an interview run by an AI interviewer, give clear, structured answers that match the job description, because tools such as HireVue score the words you say, not how you look. Use one real example per question, speak in full sentences, and say enough to be scored. Then ask when a person reviews it.

What an AI interviewer is

There are two kinds, and it helps to know which one you are facing.

  • One-way video interviews. You record answers to set questions on your own time. Software transcribes and scores them. HireVue is the best-known example.

  • Conversational AI interviewers. A voice or video agent asks questions, listens, and asks follow-ups in real time, much like a phone screen.

In both cases, the AI usually handles the first round. A person normally makes the decision.

What the research says

The largest study so far is encouraging for candidates. Economists Brian Jabarian and Luca Henkel ran a field experiment with about 70,000 applicants for customer service jobs at the recruiting firm PSG Global Solutions (working paper, January 2026, covered by Chicago Booth Review in March 2026). Applicants were randomly interviewed by a human recruiter, by a voice AI agent, or given the choice. Human recruiters made every final hiring decision.

  • Candidates interviewed by AI were 12% more likely to get a job offer.

  • They were 18% more likely to accept and start the job, and 17% more likely to still be employed after 30 days.

  • When given the choice, 80% of applicants picked the AI interviewer.

  • In AI-led interviews, candidates spoke "more clearly and directly, used fewer filler words, and provided more relevant information."

One study, one type of job. But it suggests an AI interview is not something to fear. It rewards clear, relevant answers.

What an AI interviewer scores

This is the part most candidates get wrong. Many people worry about eye contact, smiling or their background. For the best-known tool, none of that is scored.

HireVue's 2025 AI Explainability Statement says its AI "relies only on what is said by the candidate and does not use any video analysis or other audio characteristics." It scores a transcript of your words against competencies such as problem-solving, adaptability, communication and willingness to learn. It does not assess facial expressions, body language, your surroundings or your tone of voice. If an answer has too little content to score, it is flagged for a person to review.

Other tools can work differently, and employers can still watch your recording. So dress and set up as you would for any video call, and ask the recruiter what your interview evaluates.

How to prepare, in 8 steps

  1. Ask what is being scored. Email the recruiter: is the interview scored by AI, what does it assess, and does a person review it? Our guide to your rights when AI screens your application has a ready-made email.

  2. Pull the competencies from the job description. List the top 5 or 6 skills the posting repeats. Those are the most likely scoring criteria.

  3. Prepare one real example for each. A specific situation, what you did, and what happened. Vague answers give a transcript-based scorer nothing to work with.

  4. Fix your audio first. Your words are transcribed before they are scored. Use a quiet room and a decent microphone, and speak at a steady pace.

  5. Answer the question that was asked. Start with a one-sentence direct answer, then the example. Do not open with a long preamble.

  6. Speak in full sentences. Fragments and trailing-off answers transcribe badly. Finish each thought.

  7. Say enough to be scored. A one-line answer may be flagged as having too little content. Use the time you are given without padding.

  8. Practice out loud, on camera. Recording yourself is the fastest way to hear filler words and rambling. [InterviewPlan.AI mock interviews let you practice timed, recorded answers with instant feedback.]

Can you use AI in an AI interview?

Only if the employer allows it. An AI interviewer does not change the rules. If the company bans AI tools in interviews, that covers the AI-run round too. We explain how to check in Is Using an AI Interview Copilot Cheating?.

Your rights in an AI interview

In Illinois, an employer must tell you before AI analyzes your video interview, explain how it works, get your consent, and delete the video within 30 days if you ask. New York City requires notice at least 10 business days before an automated tool is used. If you need an accommodation, for example because of a speech or hearing difference, ask for an alternative format before the interview.

Frequently asked questions

Does an AI interviewer judge my face or body language? HireVue says its AI does not. Its 2025 Explainability Statement says the AI uses only what you say, with no video analysis and no tone-of-voice analysis. Other vendors may differ, so ask.

Does the AI make the hiring decision? Usually not alone. HireVue says the decision "always remains with the employer." In the Jabarian and Henkel study, human recruiters made every final decision.

Are AI interviews harder than human interviews? One large study suggests not. In a study of about 70,000 applicants, those interviewed by AI were 12% more likely to receive a job offer than those interviewed by a human recruiter.

Can I ask for a human interviewer instead? You can ask. Some employers offer the choice, and you may have a right to an accommodation if a disability affects how you would perform in an AI interview.

How long should my answers be? Long enough to give a direct answer and one specific example. Follow any time limit shown on screen, and avoid one-line answers.
