How the copilot works in a Zoom call
The copilot is a desktop app, not a Zoom plugin. It captures the audio your computer plays, which includes the interviewer's voice coming through Zoom, and turns it into a live transcript with each speaker labelled. You do not need to install anything inside Zoom or ask the host for permissions.
When the interviewer finishes a question, the copilot identifies what is being asked and drafts an answer using the resume and job description you added before the call. Behavioral questions come back in STAR form (situation, task, action, result) with a real example from your history, so you are reading prompts that are true to you rather than generic text.
The draft appears in the copilot window on your own screen. Zoom only sends what you choose to share, so if you share a single window or no window at all, the copilot stays private to you.
Setting it up before your Zoom interview
Give yourself ten minutes before the call. Most problems people hit are audio routing issues that are easy to fix in advance and stressful to fix live.
- Install the InterviewPlan AI desktop app on Windows or macOS and sign in.
- Upload your latest resume and paste the job description for this role so drafts reference the right experience.
- Open Zoom, go to Settings, then Audio, and note which speaker device Zoom is using. The copilot listens to your computer's audio output, so keep Zoom on your normal speakers or headphones.
- Join a Zoom test meeting or play a short video and confirm the copilot transcript is picking up sound.
- Place the copilot window close to your camera so glancing at it looks natural.
Zoom-specific tips
If you are asked to share your screen, choose Share, then pick the specific application window you need (for example your code editor or a slide deck) instead of Desktop. Sharing one window keeps the copilot out of view. Zoom's web client in a browser also works, because the audio still plays through your computer.
Wired or Bluetooth headphones are fine. The copilot reads the system audio stream, not the room, so headphones actually reduce echo and improve the transcript. If the transcript goes quiet, check that Zoom has not switched to a different output device after you plugged something in.
- Share a single window, never the full desktop, if you need to present.
- Use Test Speaker and Microphone in Zoom's audio settings before you join, not during the interview.
- Close other apps that play sound, such as music or notification-heavy chat tools.
Privacy and responsible use
The copilot works from audio only. It does not record the interviewer's video, and the transcript is used to draft your answers. InterviewPlan AI is SOC 2 compliant, and unused data is automatically deleted after 90 days.
Interview rules differ between employers. Some allow notes and tools, some ask candidates not to use any assistance. Read the instructions you receive and follow each employer's interview rules; the copilot is meant to help you recall and structure your own experience, not to speak for you.
