How to Answer "What Are Your Strengths and Weaknesses?"

Strengths and weaknesses questions test self awareness more than perfection. Interviewers want to see that you know what you are good at, can prove it, and handle your gaps in a mature way.

How to choose and prove a strength

Choose strengths that appear in the job description or are clearly valuable in the role. A data analyst might pick turning messy data into clear answers. A project manager might pick keeping distributed teams aligned.

Then give proof in two or three sentences: the situation, what you did and what changed. One strong example beats a list of five adjectives.

  • Good: problem breakdown, stakeholder communication, ownership of production issues, writing clean tests
  • Weak: hardworking, honest, team player, with no example
  • Tie the strength to how it will help this team specifically

How to answer the weakness question

Use a simple three step pattern: name the weakness plainly, give one moment where it showed up, then describe what you changed and what is better now. The improvement part should be the longest.

Pick something real but not central to the role. A Java developer saying they struggle with debugging is risky. Saying they used to take on too many review requests and now time box them is safe and believable.

  • Safe examples: public speaking in large groups, delegating, saying no to extra requests, estimating new types of work
  • Avoid: core skills of the job, lateness, poor attitude, anything that sounds like a character flaw
  • Avoid humble brags like I work too hard or I am a perfectionist with no detail

Common mistakes

Many candidates either refuse to name a weakness or overshare. Both raise doubts. Keep the tone calm and factual, and show growth.

  • Saying you have no weaknesses
  • Picking a weakness and giving no improvement steps
  • Choosing a strength that contradicts your resume
  • Speaking for more than a minute on either part

Prepare and rehearse

Write two strengths and two weaknesses, each with an example, so you can adapt if they ask for three strengths or your biggest weakness. Rehearse them in InterviewPlan AI mock interviews to get feedback on whether they sound genuine and specific.

Questions and model answers

4 questions you are likely to hear.

  1. What is your greatest strength? (Data Analyst)

Why they ask: They want a strength that directly improves the quality or speed of analysis.

Sample answer: My biggest strength is turning a vague business question into a clear analysis. Last quarter our marketing head asked why repeat purchases had fallen. Instead of building a large dashboard, I broke the question into cohorts, channels and delivery times, ran SQL on each and found that late deliveries in two cities explained most of the drop. I shared a one page summary with a recommendation, and operations changed the courier partner there. I like starting from the decision someone needs to make, and I think that would help your team prioritise analytics work.

  2. What is your biggest weakness? (Project Manager)

Why they ask: They check self awareness and whether the weakness would hurt delivery.

Sample answer: Earlier in my career I found it hard to delegate. I would take on status reports, risk tracking and even some testing coordination myself because it felt faster. During a release in my second year as a PM, that meant I missed an early warning about a dependency because I was buried in reporting. Since then I have assigned clear owners for each workstream, automated the weekly report from Jira, and I review rather than do. My team leads now run their own updates, and I spend more time on risks and stakeholders, which is where I add the most value.

  3. Tell me one strength and one weakness. (Java Developer)

Why they ask: They are checking honesty and whether you understand your own technical habits.

Sample answer: A strength is debugging production issues calmly. When our payment service started timing out during a sale, I traced it through logs and metrics to a connection pool limit, fixed the configuration and added an alert, all within the incident window. A weakness is that I used to under estimate frontend related work because I mainly do backend. I now break such tasks into smaller pieces, check estimates with a frontend colleague and track my actuals against estimates each sprint. My estimates have become much closer, and I still review them with the team.

  4. What weakness are you working on? (Fresher)

Why they ask: For freshers, they want honesty and evidence of a learning mindset.

Sample answer: I have been working on speaking up in group settings. In college project meetings I often had ideas but waited until someone asked me. During my internship I noticed that this meant my suggestion about caching an API response came too late in the sprint. Since then I prepare one point before every meeting and share it early, and I joined my college's tech club where I gave two short talks on Git and REST APIs. It still takes effort, but I am now comfortable presenting my work and asking questions in standups.

FAQ

Questions people ask about strengths and weaknesses.

How many strengths should I mention?

One or two with examples is better than a long list. If the interviewer asks for three, have a third ready, but always keep proof attached to each. Quality of proof matters more than quantity.

Is perfectionism a good weakness to give?

Only if you can describe a real impact, such as missing a deadline by polishing too long, and concrete steps you now take. Without that detail, it sounds rehearsed and avoids the question.

Can I mention a technical skill as a weakness?

Yes, if it is not core to the role. A backend developer can mention limited experience with a frontend framework and explain how they are learning it. Avoid naming a must have skill from the job description.

What if they ask for three weaknesses?

Prepare a short list in advance. Keep each brief, with the third being something you are actively improving, such as estimating, delegating or presenting to senior leaders. Keep each one honest and specific.

Should strengths match the job description?

Ideally, yes. The closer your strengths map to the role's main needs, the more useful your answer is to the interviewer making a hiring decision. It also shows you read the role carefully.
