Power BI problems new hires hit in the first 90 days
Most Power BI trouble comes from the model rather than the visuals. A measure gives a wrong total because of filter context, or a slicer does nothing because of relationship direction.
- DAX: CALCULATE and context transition, ALL versus REMOVEFILTERS versus ALLEXCEPT, iterator functions like SUMX, and totals that do not equal the sum of rows.
- Time intelligence: SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR and TOTALYTD returning blanks because there is no marked date table or the date column has gaps.
- Modelling: many-to-many relationships, bidirectional filters causing ambiguity, snowflaked dimensions that should be a star schema.
- Refresh: on-premises data gateway errors, expired data source credentials, privacy level conflicts and timeouts on large imports.
- Row-level security: roles using USERPRINCIPALNAME() that work in Desktop but not in the Service, and testing with View as role.
- Power Query: steps that break query folding, type changes that fail on new data, and merges that multiply rows.
Workspaces, deployment and performance
Teams publish through workspaces, apps and often deployment pipelines from development to test to production. Job Support helps you understand who has access at which level, how parameters change between stages, and why a dataset refreshed in test but not in production.
Performance tickets are common. You can use Performance Analyzer and DAX Studio output to find slow visuals and measures, and decide between import, DirectQuery and composite models with clear reasoning.
What a Power BI support session looks like
Kavya joins a Chennai analytics team building finance dashboards for a US client. The CFO's report shows a year-to-date figure that does not match the ledger. In a Job Support session she reviews the measure and the model, finds the date table is not marked and has a relationship on a datetime column, fixes both, and validates the numbers against a SQL query she writes herself.
During the review call on Teams, the live transcript helps her capture the finance team's change requests accurately.
Using Power BI job support responsibly
BI work touches sensitive business data, so share carefully.
- Do not share real financial, HR or customer figures; use anonymised samples or describe the shape of the data.
- Never share Power BI, gateway, database or Microsoft 365 credentials.
- Follow your employer's policy on sharing PBIX files and DAX with outside tools.
- Validate every number yourself before it goes to a stakeholder.
