Panel Interview Tips for Multiple Interviewers

A panel interview puts you in front of several interviewers at once, often a hiring manager, a technical lead and someone from HR or a partner team. Each person evaluates something different, so you need to engage all of them.

Before the panel

Ask the recruiter for the names and roles of the panelists. Look them up on LinkedIn to understand their focus. A technical lead will probe depth, a manager will look at ownership and delivery, and HR or a partner team will check culture and communication.

  • Prepare at least one story relevant to each panelist's role
  • Prepare a question for each panelist
  • For video panels, test gallery view so you can see everyone

During the interview

Start by addressing the person who asked the question, then include others with your eyes or by connecting your answer to their area. If one person dominates, stay polite and still include the quieter panelists.

  • Write down names and use them naturally
  • Answer the question asked, then add brief context relevant to others
  • If two panelists ask overlapping questions, acknowledge both
  • Stay calm if panelists challenge each other's points

Handling cross questions and pressure

Panels sometimes ask rapid follow ups or challenge your answer. This is often a test of composure. Take a breath, acknowledge the point and answer with facts. If you made a mistake, correct it openly.

After the panel

Send a thank you email within a day, either to each panelist if you have their emails or to the coordinator to pass on. Mention one specific topic from the discussion.

InterviewPlan AI mock interviews help you rehearse multi perspective questions, and the Interview Copilot supports panel interviews on video platforms where the employer's rules allow it.

FAQ

Questions people ask about panel interview tips.

Who should I look at when answering?

Mainly at the person who asked, with occasional glances at others. On video, look at the camera, which reaches everyone at once. Address quieter panelists by name occasionally so nobody feels left out.

How do I remember everyone's names?

Write them down as they introduce themselves, in seating order or video order. Using names occasionally helps you connect with each panelist and makes your thank you notes much easier to write.

What if panelists disagree with each other?

Stay neutral. Acknowledge both points and explain how you would weigh them, often by asking about priorities or constraints. Avoid taking sides in a way that dismisses one person or the other.

Are panel interviews harder?

They feel more intense, but they can save time because several people evaluate you at once. Preparation for each perspective makes them manageable, and practice helps you stay composed under rapid questions.
