Before the call
Treat a phone screen like any other interview. Recruiters often decide in this call whether you move forward.
- Charge your phone and check signal in your chosen spot
- Use earphones for clearer audio and free hands
- Keep your resume, the job description and notes open
- Prepare short answers on notice period, current and expected CTC and location preferences
- Have a pen and paper for names and next steps
During the call
Answer the phone with your name so the caller knows they reached the right person. Speak clearly and keep answers to about a minute unless asked for more. Pause briefly after each answer so the interviewer can follow up.
- Smile while talking; it changes your tone
- Stand or sit upright for better energy
- Avoid speaker mode and background noise
- Confirm technical terms if the line is unclear
Common phone screen questions
Recruiter calls in India and abroad follow a similar pattern. Prepare short answers for each so you sound consistent across rounds.
- Tell me about yourself
- Why are you looking for a change?
- What is your notice period?
- What are your current and expected CTC or salary range?
- Are you open to relocation or hybrid work?
- Walk me through your recent project
After the call
Ask about next steps and timelines before hanging up. Send a short thank you email or message within a day, especially for hiring manager calls. Note what you were asked so you can prepare for the next round.
