SAP Consultant Interview Questions and Answers

SAP consultant interviews test module depth, end-to-end process knowledge and project experience, from blueprinting to go-live and support. With many companies moving to S/4HANA, panels in 2026 also ask about migration approaches and Fiori. These questions reflect what functional SAP consultants are asked at Accenture, Deloitte, Infosys, TCS and client-side SAP teams.

What interviewers test in an SAP consultant interview

SAP interviews are usually led by senior consultants from the same module. They test configuration knowledge, process understanding and how many full-cycle implementations or support projects you have done.

Expect scenario questions such as a client wants a new approval step in purchasing, or a posting fails at month end, where you must explain configuration steps and integration effects.

  • Process: P2P, O2C, R2R and plan to produce flows
  • Configuration: enterprise structure, master data and key IMG settings
  • Integration: account determination and cross-module postings
  • Projects: SAP Activate phases, fit-gap, testing, cutover and hypercare
  • Support: incident handling, SLAs, root cause analysis and change requests

Topics to revise

Revise one complete process in your module with the transaction codes, configuration points and accounting entries at each step. Interviewers often ask you to walk through it live.

  • Enterprise structure: company code, plant, sales organisation and purchasing organisation
  • FI: GL, AP, AR, asset accounting and period-end closing
  • MM: purchase requisition to invoice verification, release strategy and valuation
  • SD: sales order, pricing procedure, delivery, billing and credit management
  • Automatic account determination: OBYC for MM and VKOA for SD
  • S/4HANA: Universal Journal ACDOCA, Business Partner, Fiori apps and simplification items
  • Data migration with the S/4HANA Migration Cockpit
  • Functional specs, user stories for RICEFW objects and testing cycles

How to structure your answers

For configuration questions, name the IMG path or transaction where useful, explain what the setting controls and give a real example from a project. For scenarios, explain business impact, configuration change, testing and transport.

For project stories, mention the industry, module scope, your role, the phase you worked in and a measurable outcome, such as reduced closing days or fewer billing errors.

Questions and model answers

9 questions you are likely to hear.

  1. Walk me through the procure-to-pay process and its accounting entries.

Why they ask: End-to-end process knowledge with integration is the core SAP skill.

Sample answer: It starts with a purchase requisition in ME51N, converted to a purchase order in ME21N, possibly after a release strategy approval. On goods receipt in MIGO with movement type 101, the system debits the inventory or consumption account and credits the GR/IR clearing account, based on OBYC account determination. Invoice verification in MIRO debits GR/IR and credits the vendor account, with any price difference posted per the material's price control. Payment through F110 clears the vendor and credits the bank account. I configured this flow for a manufacturing client, including tolerance limits for invoice blocks.

  2. What changed in finance with S/4HANA compared to ECC?

Why they ask: S/4HANA knowledge is expected on almost all SAP projects now.

Sample answer: The biggest change is the Universal Journal, table ACDOCA, which combines FI and CO line items in one table, so reconciliation between FI and CO is no longer needed and cost elements become GL accounts. Customers and vendors are managed through Business Partner. Asset accounting moved to new asset accounting with parallel ledgers. Many reports run in real time through Fiori apps instead of batch jobs. Credit management moved to FSCM. In a brownfield conversion I worked on, cleaning up customer and vendor data for Business Partner conversion took more effort than any configuration.

  3. What is the difference between greenfield and brownfield S/4HANA migration?

Why they ask: Migration strategy questions are common in 2026 as clients plan S/4HANA moves.

Sample answer: Greenfield is a new implementation: the client redesigns processes on S/4HANA and migrates selected master and open transactional data, which allows simplification but takes more effort and change management. Brownfield is a system conversion of the existing ECC system, keeping configuration, custom code and history, which is faster but carries old design forward. There is also selective data transition, which mixes both. The choice depends on how good current processes are, the amount of custom code and the need for history. One client chose brownfield because they had 15 years of history needed for audits.

  4. How do you do a fit-gap analysis?

Why they ask: This tests implementation methodology and client handling.

Sample answer: In SAP Activate, I run fit-to-standard workshops where we demo standard processes in a sandbox system to business users and compare them with their requirements. For each requirement I classify it as a fit, a gap that can be closed with configuration, or a gap that needs development, such as a RICEFW object. I challenge gaps by asking what business value they deliver, because many are habits from the old system. Each gap gets an owner, a solution option and an effort estimate. In one project, this approach cut custom development requests by around a third.

  5. A user reports that an invoice posting is failing with an account determination error. How do you troubleshoot?

Why they ask: Support scenarios test practical problem-solving.

Sample answer: I first reproduce the error and read the message details to identify which account key or transaction is missing. For an SD billing document, I check the account determination analysis in the billing document, which shows the access sequence and where it failed, then review VKOA for the combination of chart of accounts, sales organisation, account assignment groups and account key. Often the customer or material master is missing an account assignment group. I fix the master data or configuration in the development system, test and transport. I document the root cause in the ticket so similar issues are solved faster.

  6. How do you plan data migration for an SAP implementation?

Why they ask: Data migration is one of the highest-risk activities on SAP projects.

Sample answer: I define the scope by object, such as business partners, materials, open purchase orders, open items and balances, with owners from the business for each. I set up extraction and cleansing rules, then use the S/4HANA Migration Cockpit with staging tables or files to load data. We run at least two mock loads in quality systems, reconcile counts and values against the legacy system with business sign-off, and fix data issues each round. For a retail client, three mock migrations brought the error rate in material loads from about 12 percent to near zero before cutover.

  7. What does a cutover plan include?

Why they ask: Cutover experience shows real implementation maturity.

Sample answer: A cutover plan is a detailed hour-by-hour schedule from the final preparation to go-live. It includes transport imports, system configuration that cannot be transported, master data loads, open transaction and balance loads, reconciliations, legacy system freeze, user access setup and business validations, each with owners, durations, dependencies and a go or no-go checkpoint. It also includes a rollback plan. I usually run a dress rehearsal to validate timings. On my last go-live, the rehearsal showed that the open sales order load would take twice the planned time, so we split it into parallel jobs.

  8. How do you write a functional specification for a custom report or enhancement?

Why they ask: Working with ABAP developers is a daily part of the consultant role.

Sample answer: I start with the business requirement and why standard SAP does not meet it, then describe the solution in functional terms: selection screen fields, data sources with tables and fields, logic and calculations, output layout and authorisations. I include test scenarios with sample data and expected results. I walk the ABAP developer through it before they start, because a 30-minute discussion prevents days of rework. For a vendor ageing report with custom buckets, I gave exact table joins from BSIK and LFA1 in the older system, and the developer delivered it in one cycle without major changes.

  9. Tell me about a difficult issue you resolved during hypercare.

Why they ask: This shows pressure handling and client focus.

Sample answer: After go-live for a distribution client, many deliveries could not be billed because pricing conditions were missing for a new customer group. Order volume was high, so billing delays were affecting cash flow. I analysed the pricing procedure and found the condition records were migrated for existing customer groups but not for a group created late in the project. I worked with the business to create the records through a quick upload, reprocessed the blocked documents and added a validation step to the master data process. Billing was back to normal within a day.

FAQ

Questions people ask about sap consultant.

Which SAP module is most in demand in 2026?

FICO, MM, SD and SAP SuccessFactors remain in strong demand, along with S/4HANA migration skills, SAP BTP and analytics. The best choice depends on your background: finance professionals often move to FICO, supply chain professionals to MM or EWM.

Do SAP functional consultants need ABAP knowledge?

Not to code, but understanding tables, debugging basics, user exits, BAdIs and how custom developments work makes you much more effective. Interviewers often ask which tables store key data in your module.

How do I answer if I have only support experience?

Be honest and highlight support strengths: incident analysis, root cause fixes, change requests and configuration changes you made. Explain how you understood the end-to-end process through tickets. Many consultants move from support to implementation this way.
