GCP problems new hires hit in the first 90 days
The resource hierarchy is the first thing to learn: organisation, folders, projects, and IAM and organisation policies inherited down that tree. Many confusing errors come from a policy set two levels above the project you are working in.
- IAM: PERMISSION_DENIED because a role is granted on the wrong project, a service account lacks iam.serviceAccountUser, or an organisation policy blocks service account key creation.
- Workload Identity: GKE pods that cannot call Google APIs because the Kubernetes service account is not bound to the Google service account.
- Cloud Run: containers that fail to start because they do not listen on the PORT variable, cold starts, and VPC connector or egress settings blocking a database.
- BigQuery: queries that scan entire tables, missing partition filters, slot contention and surprise on-demand bills.
- Pub/Sub: ack deadlines, duplicate deliveries, dead-letter topics and ordering keys.
- Networking: shared VPC, firewall rules with network tags, Private Service Connect and VPC Service Controls perimeters denying access.
Pipelines, infrastructure code and data work
Teams often deploy through Cloud Build or GitHub Actions with Workload Identity Federation, and manage resources with Terraform. Job Support helps you read a failing build step, understand a Terraform plan against the google provider and trace which identity a pipeline is really using.
On data-heavy teams, GCP roles overlap with data engineering: Dataflow jobs, Composer (managed Airflow) DAGs and BigQuery scheduled queries. You can bring those tickets too.
What a GCP support session looks like
Sneha joins a Bengaluru analytics startup on Google Cloud. A Cloud Run service suddenly cannot write to a BigQuery dataset. In a Job Support session she reviews the redacted error and the service's identity, finds it is running as the default compute service account after a redeploy, and prepares a change to use the dedicated service account with BigQuery Data Editor on that dataset.
In the platform team's Google Meet sync, the live transcript helps her follow a discussion about least privilege and she proposes the fix herself.
Using GCP job support responsibly
Your job is yours to do. Job Support helps you understand and decide; you make the change.
- Never share Google account passwords, service account key files, OAuth tokens or gcloud credentials.
- Redact project IDs, dataset names and any customer data in query results before sharing.
- Follow your employer's policy on sharing Terraform and configuration with outside tools.
