ATS-friendly resume format for Indian IT professionals
Team InterviewPlan · October 17, 2026 · Updated October 17, 2026

An ATS friendly resume format for India uses a single column, standard headings like Summary, Skills, Experience and Education, plain fonts, and no tables, text boxes, photos or graphics. Save it as a text-based PDF or Word file, mirror keywords from the job description truthfully, and lead each bullet with an action and a result.
You have five years of solid experience, a clean resume your friend designed in Canva, and you have applied to forty roles. Two callbacks. The problem may not be your experience at all. It may be that the applicant tracking system, or ATS, could not read your resume properly, so recruiters searching for your skills never saw you.
This guide shows you a resume format that both software and humans read easily, with specific advice for IT professionals in India, from service company engineers to people targeting product startups and remote roles abroad.
What does an ATS actually do with your resume?
An ATS is the software most mid-size and large companies use to manage applications. When you upload your resume, it parses the file into fields such as name, contact details, job titles, employers, dates, skills and education. Recruiters then search and filter that database, often by keywords like "Spring Boot", "Azure" or "Power BI", and by years of experience.
Two things can go wrong. First, the parser misreads your layout, so your skills end up in the wrong field or disappear. Second, your resume does not contain the words the recruiter searches for, so you never appear in results. A good format fixes the first problem. Smart, honest keyword use fixes the second.
What layout rules make a resume ATS friendly?
Keep the design simple. You can still make it look professional, but structure matters more than style.
Single column. Two column layouts can be read left to right across both columns, mixing your skills into your job history.
No tables, text boxes or graphics for content. Parsers often skip them entirely.
No skill bars, star ratings or icons. They mean nothing to software and little to recruiters.
Contact details in the main body, not the header or footer. Some systems ignore headers and footers.
Standard fonts such as Calibri, Arial or Georgia at 10 to 12 points.
Standard section headings: Summary, Skills, Experience, Projects, Education, Certifications.
Consistent dates in one format, such as Jun 2022 to Present.
A text-based file. Use a Word file or a PDF exported from Word or Google Docs. Never a scanned image.
Here is a quick test. Open your PDF, select all, copy and paste it into a plain text editor. If the text comes out in a sensible order with nothing missing, most ATS will read it too. If it comes out jumbled, fix the layout before you apply anywhere.
What should you leave off an Indian IT resume?
Older Indian resume templates include personal details that modern recruiters do not need. They take space, add no value and can invite bias. Remove these unless a specific employer asks for them.
Photo, date of birth, marital status, gender, religion and father's name.
Full home address. City and state are enough, plus willingness to relocate if relevant.
Current CTC and expected CTC. Discuss these in conversation, not on the resume.
A declaration line such as "I hereby declare that the above information is true".
Hobbies, unless they are relevant to the role, such as open source contributions.
Long lists of every tool you have ever touched.
Notice period is a judgement call. Many Indian recruiters filter by it, so a short line such as "Notice period: 30 days" under your contact details can help, especially if yours is short. If yours is 90 days, leave it off and handle it in conversation using our notice period guide.
What is the best section order for IT professionals?
Order sections by what the recruiter needs to see first. For most experienced professionals that is a quick summary, a skills block for keyword scanning and then your work history.
Experienced (2+ years) | Fresher or career switcher |
|---|---|
Name and contact details | Name and contact details |
Professional summary (3 to 4 lines) | Career objective or summary (2 to 3 lines) |
Technical skills (grouped) | Technical skills (grouped) |
Work experience (reverse chronological) | Projects (academic, internship or personal) |
Key projects (if not covered in experience) | Internships or training |
Certifications | Education with year of graduation |
Education | Certifications and achievements |
Keep it to one page for under five years of experience and two pages beyond that. If you have a career break, show it honestly with a brief line, and see our guide on explaining a gap in your resume.
How do you use keywords without stuffing them?
ATS keyword matching is simpler than many people think. Recruiters search for skills, tools and job titles. Your job is to make sure the real skills you have appear in the words the employer uses.
Copy the job description into a document and highlight every skill, tool and qualification.
Mark the ones you genuinely have. Ignore the rest. Never add skills you cannot discuss in an interview.
Match the employer's wording. If they write "Microsoft Azure" and you wrote "cloud", use their term.
Include both the full form and the abbreviation once, such as "Continuous Integration (CI/CD)".
Place key skills in your summary, skills section and inside the bullet where you used them. Context beats repetition.
Tailor the top third of your resume for each role family, such as backend developer versus data engineer.
Keyword stuffing, like pasting the job description in white text, does not work. Recruiters read the parsed text, and hidden keywords show up immediately and look dishonest.
How should you write experience bullets?
Each bullet should show an action, the skill or tool, and a result. Start with a strong verb. Add a number where you honestly can. Keep each bullet to one or two lines.
Weak bullet | Strong bullet |
|---|---|
Responsible for developing APIs. | Built 12 REST APIs in Java and Spring Boot for a payments module, cutting average response time from 800 to 300 ms. |
Worked on Power BI dashboards. | Designed a Power BI sales dashboard with DAX measures used by 40 regional managers, replacing 6 manual Excel reports. |
Handled testing activities. | Automated 150 regression test cases with Selenium and TestNG, reducing release testing from three days to one. |
Part of migration project. | Migrated 20 on-premise services to AWS using Terraform and Jenkins pipelines, with zero downtime during cutover. |
The numbers in these bullets are examples. Use your own, and only ones you can explain in an interview. If you are in a service company, you can mention the client by industry rather than name, such as "for a US healthcare client".
What does a full ATS friendly resume look like?
Here is the top section of a resume for Rohan, a backend developer with four years of experience applying to product companies. Notice how much information fits in a few clean lines.
Rohan Mehta | Pune, Maharashtra | rohan.mehta@email.com | +91 98XXXXXXXX | linkedin.com/in/rohanmehta | Notice period: 30 days. SUMMARY: Backend developer with 4 years of experience building Java and Spring Boot microservices for banking and payments clients. Focused on API performance, clean code and reliable releases on AWS. SKILLS: Languages: Java, SQL, Python. Frameworks: Spring Boot, Hibernate, JUnit. Cloud and DevOps: AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda), Docker, Jenkins, Git. Databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis. EXPERIENCE: Software Engineer, Large IT services company, Pune, Jun 2022 to Present. Built REST APIs for a US banking client's payments module, cutting average response time from 800 to 300 ms. Led the move of three services to Docker on AWS, reducing deployment time from two hours to fifteen minutes.
On a real resume each of those labels would be its own heading with bullets underneath. Keep the structure, and replace the details with your own.

Frequently asked questions
Is PDF or Word better for ATS in India?
Most modern ATS read both well, as long as the PDF is text-based, meaning exported from Word or Google Docs rather than scanned. If a job portal specifically asks for Word, use Word. Always run the copy and paste test to make sure your text comes out in the right order.
Should I put a photo on my resume in India?
No, for most IT roles. A photo adds nothing for the ATS and can introduce bias. Modern Indian and global recruiters do not expect one. The only exceptions are roles or countries where it is explicitly requested, which are rare in IT.
Can I use a Canva template for an ATS friendly resume?
Only if it is a simple single column template without graphics, tables or text boxes. Many attractive Canva designs use multiple columns and icons that parsers read poorly. Test the exported PDF with the plain text copy and paste method before you use it.
How many pages should an IT resume be?
One page if you have under five years of experience, and up to two pages if you have more. Recruiters scan quickly, so every line should earn its place. Long project lists from many years ago can usually be shortened to a single line each.
Should I mention my current CTC on my resume?
No. Keep CTC and expected CTC for the conversation with the recruiter, where you can explain context like variable pay or joining bonus. Putting it on the resume can anchor negotiations early and is not expected by most employers.
