How to Negotiate a Job Offer

Most employers expect some negotiation, and a polite, well researched request rarely harms an offer. The key is to know your value, understand the package and ask clearly.

Understand the full offer

In India, offers are usually stated as CTC, which can include fixed salary, variable pay, employer PF, gratuity, insurance and sometimes joining bonus or stock. Ask for the breakdown and focus on the fixed component and monthly in hand pay. In the US and many remote roles, look at base salary, bonus, equity, health benefits and paid time off.

  • Fixed versus variable pay and how variable is paid
  • Joining bonus and any clawback if you leave early
  • Stock or ESOP vesting schedule
  • Notice period, probation and relocation support
  • Work mode: remote, hybrid or onsite

Timing and approach

Negotiate after you have a verbal or written offer, not during early rounds. Express enthusiasm first, then ask for time to review, usually a day or two. Make your request by phone or video if possible, and confirm in writing.

Scripts you can use

Salary: Thank you for the offer. I am excited about the role. Based on the scope we discussed and market rates for similar roles, I was expecting a fixed component closer to 24 LPA. Is there flexibility there?

Joining bonus: I understand the fixed band is limited. Since I will forgo my annual bonus by leaving now, could we consider a joining bonus to bridge that?

Competing offer: I have another offer at a higher fixed pay, but I prefer this role because of the team and product. If you can bring the fixed pay closer to that, I am ready to accept.

Handling counter offers and declines

If your current employer makes a counter offer, consider why you started looking in the first place. Money rarely fixes issues with growth or scope. If the new employer cannot move on salary, ask about other levers such as an earlier review, a joining bonus or extra leave.

  • Do not bluff about competing offers
  • Do not negotiate after accepting unless circumstances change significantly
  • Do not issue ultimatums
  • Do not make many separate requests; bundle them in one conversation

Questions and model answers

3 questions you are likely to hear.

  1. Is this offer acceptable to you? (Java Developer, India)

Why they ask: The recruiter is checking if you will accept or negotiate.

Sample answer: Thank you, I am really excited about joining the platform team. I have reviewed the offer and the fixed component is 19 LPA. Considering that I will be owning services in production and joining the on call rotation, and based on what I see in the market for this level, I was hoping for around 22 LPA fixed. If that is difficult, I am open to discussing a joining bonus to make up part of the gap. Could you check what flexibility there is?

  2. What would it take for you to accept? (Data Analyst, competing offer)

Why they ask: They want a clear number and condition so they can close the offer.

Sample answer: I appreciate you asking directly. I have another offer at 16 LPA fixed, and your offer is at 14. I prefer your team because of the product analytics work and the mentoring structure you described. If you can match 16 LPA fixed, or come close to it with a joining bonus, I am ready to accept this week and can share my resignation timeline right away.

  3. Our budget is fixed. Can you accept this offer? (Project Manager)

Why they ask: They are testing whether other parts of the package can move.

Sample answer: I understand that the base salary band is fixed. The role itself is exactly what I want, so I would like to find a way to make it work. Would it be possible to include a joining bonus to compensate for the annual bonus I will lose by leaving now, or schedule a compensation review after six months based on agreed goals? Either of those would let me accept with confidence.

FAQ

Questions people ask about negotiating an offer.

Can negotiating cause an offer to be withdrawn?

It is rare when you are polite, reasonable and specific. Offers are more likely to be withdrawn because of aggressive demands, dishonesty about competing offers or repeated renegotiation. Keep your tone appreciative.

How much should I ask for?

Base your request on market data for the role, city and experience, and the scope of the job. Ask for a specific figure slightly above your target to leave room for compromise.

Should I negotiate a fresher offer?

Fresher packages at large companies are usually fixed. You can still ask about joining date, location preference or relocation support, but salary flexibility is limited. Startups may be more open to discussion.

Is it better to negotiate by email or phone?

A phone or video call is more personal and allows a quick discussion. Follow up with an email summarising what you agreed, and wait for a revised written offer before resigning.

What if they ask for my current payslips?

This is common in India. Share them honestly. Your negotiation should rest on the value of the new role and the market rate, not just a percentage increase over your current pay.
