Databricks problems new hires hit in the first 90 days
Spark errors are long and the first line is rarely the useful one. Learning to read the Spark UI, stages and executor logs is the skill that unlocks most Databricks tickets.
- Memory and skew: executor OOM, a single straggler task in a stage, and joins that need salting, broadcast hints or adaptive query execution.
- Shuffle tuning: spark.sql.shuffle.partitions left at defaults, tiny files from over-partitioning and slow writes.
- Delta Lake: MERGE failing because multiple source rows match one target row, schema evolution and mergeSchema, OPTIMIZE, Z-ordering and VACUUM retention.
- Unity Catalog: catalog, schema and table grants, external locations and storage credentials, and clusters in the wrong access mode for UC tables.
- Ingestion: Auto Loader checkpoints, schema hints and rescued data columns, and streaming jobs that restart from the wrong offset.
- AnalysisException errors from unresolved columns, case sensitivity and ambiguous references after joins.
Jobs, Workflows and deployment
Moving a notebook into production usually means a Databricks Workflow with tasks, job clusters, retries and alerts, and increasingly Databricks Asset Bundles in CI. Job Support helps you read a failed run, understand task dependencies and parameters, and work out whether a cluster policy or library conflict caused the failure.
Many teams also run Delta Live Tables pipelines with expectations. Sessions help you understand why an expectation dropped rows or why a pipeline update is stuck.
What a Databricks support session looks like
Sneha joins a Hyderabad data team at an IT services firm working for a US insurer. A nightly claims pipeline fails with a MERGE error after a source change. In a Job Support session she reviews the redacted error and the merge logic, finds duplicate claim IDs in the new source batch, adds a ROW_NUMBER de-duplication step before the merge, and adds a data quality check.
In the morning hand-off call with the US team, the live transcript helps her follow their questions and explain the fix and the new check herself.
Using Databricks job support responsibly
Pipelines often carry personal and financial data. Share logic and errors, not data.
- Never share Databricks personal access tokens, service principal secrets or cloud credentials.
- Do not paste real records from tables; use schemas and synthetic samples.
- Follow your employer's policy on sharing notebooks and pipeline code externally.
Databricks job support pricing and how to start
Job Support costs $5 per hour, taxes included. Each hour includes 200 AI credits plus support, and hours and credits never expire. Pay by Stripe or bank transfer. Refunds apply only if the tool does not work.
The free plan includes 5 live Copilot minutes and 100 AI credits, no card needed. Install the desktop app on Windows or macOS and bring a failing job run.
