Snowflake problems new hires hit in the first 90 days
The most common first error in Snowflake is not a SQL error at all. It is "Object does not exist or not authorized", which usually means your current role cannot see the object, not that it is missing.
- Access control: role hierarchy, USE ROLE and USE WAREHOUSE context, future grants, and ownership of objects created by the wrong role.
- Loading: COPY INTO errors from file format mismatches, ON_ERROR settings, external stages pointing at the wrong S3, Azure or GCS path, and storage integration permissions.
- Snowpipe: files that never load because notifications are misconfigured, and checking load history to find what was skipped.
- Streams and tasks: stale streams, tasks that are suspended after creation, and task graphs failing silently.
- Semi-structured data: VARIANT columns, LATERAL FLATTEN and casting JSON fields correctly.
- Cost and performance: oversized warehouses, auto-suspend settings, queries spilling to remote storage and clustering keys that do not help.
dbt, orchestration and the query profile
Many Snowflake teams model data with dbt and orchestrate through Airflow, Dagster or Snowflake tasks. Job Support helps you read a dbt model and its ref graph, fix incremental model logic and understand why a test like unique or not_null started failing.
For performance work, sessions help you read the Query Profile: partitions scanned versus total, spilling, exploding joins, and where result caching or a materialised view might help.
What a Snowflake support session looks like
Vikram joins a data team at a Bengaluru SaaS company serving US clients. His dbt run fails with "Object does not exist or not authorized" on a new source table. In a Job Support session he checks which role dbt uses, finds the source schema has no future grants for that role, and prepares the grant statements for the platform owner to approve.
In the weekly cost review on Zoom, the live transcript helps him follow a discussion on warehouse sizing and contribute his own findings from the query history.
Using Snowflake job support responsibly
Warehouses hold large volumes of business data, so keep sensitive details out of anything you share.
- Share query text, table shapes and synthetic rows, never real customer or financial records.
- Never share Snowflake passwords, key pair files, OAuth tokens or account URLs if they are confidential.
- Follow your employer's policy on sharing SQL and dbt code externally.
