Tableau problems new hires hit in the first 90 days
Most Tableau confusion comes from the order of operations: which filters apply before a FIXED calculation, when a table calculation runs, and why a context filter changes the result.
- LOD expressions: FIXED versus INCLUDE versus EXCLUDE, and FIXED calculations ignoring dimension filters unless they are added to context.
- Table calculations: wrong Compute Using, addressing and partitioning, and running totals that restart unexpectedly.
- Data sources: relationships versus joins versus blending, duplicated rows from a join, and blending that only works at one level.
- Extracts: refresh failures on Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud, embedded versus prompted credentials, and incremental refresh missing late data.
- Security: user filters with USERNAME() or ISMEMBEROF(), and published data sources with row-level rules.
- Performance: dashboards with too many quick filters, high-cardinality marks and custom SQL that defeats optimisation.
Publishing, governance and stakeholder work
Teams usually publish to projects on Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud with permissions by group, and some use Tableau Prep flows for preparation. Job Support helps you understand the publishing structure, schedule extracts sensibly and troubleshoot why a workbook works on Desktop but fails on Server.
Much of the job is conversation: clarifying what a business user means by active customer, or why a figure differs from their spreadsheet. Preparing for those calls is part of what sessions cover.
What a Tableau support session looks like
Arjun joins a Mumbai team building sales dashboards for a global consumer brand. A regional manager says the customer count is wrong whenever a region filter is applied. In a Job Support session he reviews the calculation, sees a FIXED LOD that ignores the dimension filter, adds the filter to context, and checks the result against a SQL count he runs himself.
In the follow-up Webex review, the live transcript helps him track the manager's new requests so nothing is missed.
Using Tableau job support responsibly
Dashboards often contain commercially sensitive data, so be careful about what you share.
- Share calculation logic and anonymised samples, not real customer or sales data.
- Never share Tableau Server, Tableau Cloud or database credentials, or personal access tokens.
- Follow your employer's rules on sharing TWB or TWBX files externally.
